The post-mortem history of a prolific Maastrichtian ammonite and nautiloid fauna preserved as phosphatic steinkerns in chalk of the upper Miria Formation of Western Australia is described. Sediment infilling of phragmocones, required for their fossilisation, was accomplished by means of perforations in the shell wall induced by the activity of abundant endoliths. These include borings ascribed to clionid sponges (Entobia), thallophytes, polychaete worms (including Caulostrepis and probable Maeandropolydora), phoronids (Talpina and Gnathichnus) and others of conjectural origin. Sediment infilling by this mechanism is considered to be more applicable to the taphonomy of phragmocones in general than sediment entry through the siphuncle and to be indicative of low sedimentation rates for the hosting strata. Nonheteromorph ammonites, and the nautiloid Cimomia, are preserved almost exclusively as phragmocones in the upper Miria Formation, and are numerically subordinate to the heteromorph Eubaculites which, together with Glyptoxoceras, is preserved predominantly as body chambers. This phragmocone/body chamber preservational contrast is attributed to the influence of shell shape on pre-burial mechanical abrasion. The apparent dominance of Eubaculites is considered to be largely a preservational artifact and ascribed to the ease with which body chambers were infilled, and thereby favoured for steinkern formation, relative to phragmocones. Phragmocones, or parts thereof. not filled with sediment were eliminated from the fossil record by diagenetic aragonite dissolution. Many ammonites with open umbilici have the early whorls missing. This we attribute to the trapping of sediment in the umbilicus prior to burial, preventing endolith attack whereby the early whorls avoided a sediment infilling. However, the protected inner whorls of involute ammonites and Cimomia, which have closed umbilici, and the inner whorls of evolute ammonites where a cemented umbilical plug supported the mouldic cavity left by shell dissolution, were preserved and were commonly infilled with calcite spar later in diagenesis. The dearth of cephalopod fossils in chalk underlying the upper Miria Formation is ascribed to diagenesis in which aragonite dissolution was not preceded by cementation.  相似文献

A new classification is proposed in which Bactritoidea and Ammonoidea are considered as subclasses. The subclass Bactritoidea includes a single order, Bactritida. The subclass Ammonoidea includes ten orders: Anarcestida (suborders Agoniatitina, Auguritina, Anarcestina, Gephurocerina, Timanocerina, and Prolecanitina), Tornocerida, Goniatitida (with suborders Goniatitina and Cyclolobina), Praeglyphiocerida, Clymeniida (with suborders Gonioclymeniina and Clymeniina), Medlicottiida, Ceratitida (with suborders Paraceltitina, Otocerina, Meekocerina, Sagecerina, Ptychitina, Ceratitina, Pinacocerina, Megaphyllitina, Arcestina, and Lobitina), Phyllocerida, Lytocerida (with suborders Lytocerina and Turrilitina), and Ammonitida (with suborders Psilocerina, Haplocerina, Stephanocerina, Cardiocerina, and Ancylocerina).  相似文献

Major classifications of nautiloid cephalopods are critically reviewed. It is suggested that this cephalopod group is subdivided into 5 subclasses and 17 orders: Ellesmeroceratoidea (including the orders Plectronocerida, Protactinocerida, Yanhecerida, and Ellesmerocerida), Endoceratoidea (including the orders Endocerida and Intejocerida), Actinoceratoidea (including the order Actinocerida), Nautiloidea (with the orders Basslerocerida, Tarphycerida, Lituitida, Discosorida, Oncocerida, and Nautilida), and Orthoceratoidea (including the orders Orthocerida, Ascocerida, Dissidocerida, and Bajkalocerida). On 16 June 1979, a herd of 41 sperm whales stranded near the mouth of the Siuslaw River in Florence, Oregon. The stomach contents from 32 whales were collected, identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, enumerated, and measured. A total of 20,247 cephalopod lower beaks that represented 24 species from 14 different families were recovered. The most numerous species were Histioteuthis hoylei (25.9%), Taonius borealis (12.9%), Galiteuthis phyllura (11.2%), Gonatopsis/Berryteuthis type (10.9%), and Moroteuthis robusta (10.7%). Reconstructed estimates of mass indicated that M. robusta contributed almost 50% of the total mass of cephalopods consumed, followed by H. hoylei (19.3%), and T. borealis (7.0%). The most important species in the diet of stranded whales were M. robusta, H. hoylei, T. borealis, G. phyllura, Octopoteuthis deletron, and Gonatopsis/Berryteuthis type. There were significant differences in the diet of males and females, but no differences between sperm whales of different age groups. Overall, sperm whales primarily consumed small cephalopods that were likely eaten south of 45ºN in or near the California Current System. This study provides new estimates of the food habits of sperm whales in the northeast Pacific from one of the largest strandings of this species.  相似文献

Field and flume experiments with modern Nautilus pompilius establish two prerequisites to recognize in situ preservation of fossil cephalopod shells (soft parts were within body chamber in situ at the time of fossilization): occurrence of the upper jaw within the body chamber and the position of jaws within the body chamber. Morphology of shells and jaws in modern and fossil nautiloids is so similar that these prerequisites can be applied for fossil nautiloids and provide implications for ammonoids. The upper jaws of Nautilus start to move at a water velocity of > 0.2 m/s, when the shells are reoriented with the aperture downstream; jaws are therefore unlikely to be secondarily deposited near the shell aperture by bottom currents. The lower jaws, moved at the velocity of > 0.1 m/s, can be deposited around the shell aperture by weak current (0.1–0.2 m/s in velocity), but never enter the inside of body chamber. Neither jaw is likely to be separately and selectively displaced from the inside of the body chamber through scavenging of the soft parts by burrowing infaunal animals. An upper jaw preserved inside the body chamber, together with a lower jaw, is thus a reliable indicator of in situ preservation; a sole lower jaw preserved around the shell aperture is likely to be secondarily deposited. Sedimentary structures inferring rapid burial events and jaw size are useful as additional evidence. Smaller jaws were more likely to be displaced from the body chamber by scavenging by infaunal animals after in situ burial, so that smaller jaws preserved within the body chamber suggest less scavenging. These findings are crucial to interpreting the taphonomic history and palaeo-ecology of fossil cephalopods.  相似文献

The discovery of well preserved and almost complete fossil coleoid cephalopods near Osteno in northern Italy has allowed the original study of a single specimen by Pinna (1972) to be enhanced. The unusual structure of the ten arms, showing a clear differentiation in the shape of the arm hooks (long and thin on six arms and short and stocky on the other four), is a distinctive character which is not present in any Jurassic family of coleoids known to date. We distinguish two new genera: Ostenoteuthis, with the species O. siroi sp. nov., and Uncinoteuthis, with the species U. cuvieri sp. nov. The new family Ostenoteuthidae (Order uncertain) is erected for them. The systematic position of this family within the fossil coleoids is discussed.  相似文献

Changes in ammonite morphology during the earliest Early Aptian (Cretaceous) of an epicontinental sea in northern Germany were investigated based on new and rich material of Deshayesites (Deshayesitidae). This is a globally distributed genus and one of the most important ammonites of the Cretaceous with respect to biostratigraphy and abundance. The purpose of our study was to describe changes in morphology over few hundred thousand years and to discuss their relationships to major palaeoenvironmental perturbations. Our material is derived from four different horizons, and the studied stratigraphical interval includes a sea‐level change, a period of warming and an oxygen depletion event. We observe variable patterns in the occurrence of different morphological groups through time, probably indicating that morphotypes were individually impacted by environmental change. These morphological groups, unequivocally attributed to Deshayesites, cannot be fit into the existing species classification system. The greatest morphological disparity in Deshayesites is multi‐causal. It may be the result of: (1) an invasion of two morphogroups new to the habitat, which thus immediately face considerably greater competition in an environment just recovered from low‐oxygen conditions in parts of the water column during an early interval within Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a (OAE 1a); or, (2) it may be due to a rise in sea level with a simultaneous invasion of competitors of Tethyan origin. This sheds new light on the current concept for high morphological variability within ammonite species and poses challenges to our current ideas about ammonite diversity and the use of well‐established index‐species in supraregional correlations.  相似文献

Faunal analysis of an oxygen‐depleted marine Lower Carboniferous succession (Late Mississippian Ruddle Shale) suggests how some cephalopod taxa laid their eggs during the Late Palaeozoic. At the Ruddle Shale collecting site in Arkansas, USA, the facies and overall fauna suggest severe oxygen depletion at the sediment/water interface. The Ammonoidea, with their small egg size, were probably laid in suspended gelatinous egg‐filled masses in the water column above the bottom or by attachment of the egg masses to floating debris. The ammonitella embryos developed within the suspended or attached egg mass; hatched individuals became part of the free‐swimming plankton biota. Based on shell morphology the Bactritoidea probably followed the same reproductive pattern. Coiled nautiloids (the Nautilida) and most orthoconic nautiloids (mostly the Pseudorthocerida) probably did not lay their eggs in the mid water column or as floatant attachments. This conclusion is based on the fact that, with one exception, all shells recovered of these two nautiloid orders are well past hatching. Gastropods in the Ruddle Shale are very small and cannot be visually detected in the field. However, microgastropods are abundant in washed residues. Most specimens are much smaller than 1 mm. The largest caenogastropod specimen is 1.3 mm high. These caenogastropods represent isolated larval shells and a successful metamorphosis was impossible because of oxygen depletion on the bottom. Allegations that a size of more than 1 mm is too large for pelagic larvae are refuted by examples of planktotrophic larval shells of modern gastropods (more than 1 mm high) and Triassic caenogastropods (up to 2 mm high) from the Cassian Formation (Northern Italy, South Alps). Repository information is given for the type‐material of the gastropod species Nuetzelina striata  Bandel, 2002 and Anozyga arkansasensis  Bandel, 2002 which were both erected based on specimens from the Ruddle Shale that were illustrated by Nützel & Mapes in 2001.  相似文献

为了解南海北部近海头足类优势种的种间关系,根据2014—2015年该海域4个季节底拖网渔业资源调查,应用相对重要性指数、生态位宽度和重叠指数从时空维度分析头足类优势种的生态位特征。结果表明: 该海域4个季节的头足类优势种共5种,分别为剑尖枪乌贼、中国枪乌贼、火枪乌贼、金乌贼和杜氏枪乌贼,前两种是4个季节的共同优势种。与历史数据相比,头足类优势种的种类组成已发生改变。头足类资源时空分布格局明显,海南岛南部至粤东海域资源密度高于北部湾,季节变化呈夏季高而冬季低特征。时空生态位分析表明,优势种的时间和空间生态位宽度没有一致位序,剑尖枪乌贼和中国枪乌贼分别占据最大的时间(1.32)和空间生态位宽度(3.90),而时间和空间生态位宽度最小的物种分别是金乌贼(0.98)和杜氏枪乌贼(2.04)。虽然时间生态位重叠在数值上显著高于空间生态位重叠,但二者均是在中国枪乌贼、剑尖枪乌贼、火枪乌贼等种对间有较高重叠,而杜氏枪乌贼与其余4个优势种的重叠较低。相关分析表明,在时空尺度上生态位宽度与丰度的变化均呈极显著负相关。生态位可反映物种资源量时空变化信息,丰富了传统渔业群落研究方法。  相似文献
